Our Access Technology Advisors are on hand to demonstrate a wide variety of equipment and software that aid daily living, in your home or by making an appointment at our resource centre located within our Ipswich office.

It doesn't matter if you have experience with technology, or you consider yourself to be a complete novice, we can work with you to help find the right solution for you or make the most of the devices you already own.

So, whether you want to make your computer easier to see, have your post read aloud, or learn how to connect with friends and family using your voice alone, our Tech Team can help.

Examples of how we can help:

Digital magnification advice and support

When optical magnification is not enough, or you find yourself grappling with a drawer full of lenses, digital solutions may be the next step. Ranging in size to fit in a pocket or to sit on a desk, digital magnifiers have the benefit of presenting high definition text using multiple zoom levels and contrast options, as well as additional features designed to enhance your reading experience.

In addition to these stand-alone magnifiers, digital screen magnification software can be used to enlarge and enhance your computer, tablet, or smart phone screen.

Touch typing

Learning how to type without looking at the keyboard is an invaluable skill that ensures a computer can still be accessed with deteriorating vision. Touch typing can also help to reduce eye strain and problems associated with poor posture from attempting to view the keys. We can support you to learn how to touch type, side-by-side or independently using accessible teaching software.

Hot key help

Hot keys are keyboard shortcuts which perform tasks on a computer without the use of a mouse and are particularly helpful for those who struggle to locate the mouse pointer. We can help familiarize you with the most commonly used Windows and Mac hotkeys; for navigation, word processing, emails and browsing the web

Screen reader training

Screen readers are just that - software that turns text on your computer, phone, or tablet screen into speech. So, when you can no longer see to read your screen, or just want to rest your eyes, we can support you to use popular screen reading programmes and features.

Smart phone and tablet support

Smart phones are mobile devices that provide a wealth of internet and multimedia functions in addition to their traditional voice calling and text messaging services. We offer advice and learning support on Android and Apple smart phones, as well as Android, Apple and Amazon Fire tablets; all of which are jam packed full of accessibility features which make it possible for those with low or no vision to use.

Support for specialist apps

Microsoft Seeing AI, Sound Scape, and Be My Eyes are just three of the numerous smart phone and tablet apps that have been designed specifically for those with visual impairments. These apps can help with tasks such as identifying objects, detecting light and colour, and to let you know exactly where you are when out walking. We can offer advice and support on the best and most current apps to suit your needs.

Specialist software for beginners

If you would like to take advantage of some of the features that computers, smart phones and tablets have to offer but find the idea daunting, software packages such as Dolphin GuideConnect and Synnaptic have been designed specifically to provide a specialised interface to make using your device simple and intuitive.

We offer demonstrations and learning support for these and other such solutions and are here to support you every step of the way.

Smart homes technology advice

Or to just play books and radio stations, set alarms and timers, and check your appointments with a single voice command? We can provide support and installation of smart home speakers and peripherals that make all this possible, including Amazon Echo, Google Home and Apple Home Pod.
